About Lafayette Coney Island

Craving an authentic taste of Detroit? Lafayette Coney Island serves up legendary Coney dogs at 118 W Lafayette Blvd, Detroit, MI 48226.

The Heartbeat of Detroit's Coney Culture

In the bustling streets of downtown Detroit, Lafayette Coney Island stands as a testament to the city's rich culinary heritage. Established in 1924 by William Keros, this iconic eatery has been serving up its signature Coney dogs for nearly a century. The restaurant's unassuming facade belies the vibrant history and flavor that await inside.

The Coney dog—a natural-casing beef hot dog nestled in a steamed bun, generously topped with a beef heart-based chili, diced onions, and a stripe of yellow mustard—has become synonymous with Detroit's food scene. This combination, simple yet profoundly satisfying, has garnered a devoted following among locals and visitors alike.

A Menu Rooted in Tradition

Lafayette's menu is a celebration of classic American fare, with a focus on its renowned Coney dogs. Patrons often opt for the "two on one," ordering two Coney dogs on a single plate, accompanied by a side of crispy fries or chili cheese fries. The chili, rich and flavorful, is a closely guarded family recipe that has remained unchanged over the decades.Lafayette Coney Island

Beyond the signature dogs, the menu offers a selection of comfort foods, including loose hamburgers, chili bowls, and a variety of beverages like Vernors soda—a Michigan favorite. The simplicity of the offerings underscores the restaurant's commitment to quality and consistency.

A Rivalry That Defines a City

Adjacent to Lafayette Coney Island is American Coney Island, established in 1917 by William's brother, Gust Keros. The proximity of the two establishments has sparked a friendly rivalry that has become a defining feature of Detroit's culinary landscape. While both restaurants serve similar fare, subtle differences in chili recipes and ambiance have led to passionate debates among patrons over which spot reigns supreme.

This sibling rivalry has not only fueled competition but also elevated the Coney dog to iconic status within the city. It's common to see groups of friends splitting their loyalties, each advocating for their preferred establishment with fervent enthusiasm.

The Ambiance: A Step Back in Time

Stepping into Lafayette Coney Island is like entering a time capsule. The interior boasts vintage decor, with tiled walls, stainless steel counters, and classic diner stools. The atmosphere is lively, with the sounds of sizzling grills, clattering dishes, and the rhythmic cadence of orders being called out.Michigan

The staff, many of whom have been with the establishment for years, contribute to the restaurant's charm. Their swift service and friendly banter create a welcoming environment that keeps patrons returning time and again.

A Must-Visit for Food Enthusiasts

For those seeking an authentic Detroit experience, Lafayette Coney Island is a culinary landmark not to be missed. Its enduring popularity is a testament to the power of tradition, quality, and community. Whether you're a lifelong Detroiter or a first-time visitor, a trip to Lafayette promises a satisfying meal and a slice of the city's rich history.Lafayette Coney Island

  • A true Coney Island experience, don't miss this place. It is authentic, wonderful hot dogs, delicious chili, perfectly cut onions, and delightfully steamed buns. It is the whole package.

  • So we tried this place plus the one next door (American Coney Island)…read the history behind this. It was a close call, but I his one won out between the two. The bun was a little better and the hotdog was easier to cut (perfectly cooked with no hardness on the outside). It’s crowded inside and loud, but kinda iconic. Server was great. Parked in the parking garage across the street.

  • Do you want to go back in time to 1993? You and your friends played basketball in the park and then NES for hours. Now you’re out looking for a late night snack. The days are carefree and word just feels fun and simple. That feeling is what you get when you take your first bite of a Lafayette Coney Island hot dog. Is it artesian? No. Instagram worthy? Depending on who you ask. The decor is decades old. You won’t find anything fancy here. Just a tried and true Detroit comfort food. Nothing on the menu is more than $5. I have I had better coney dogs? For sure. Would I pass on this place when passing through Detroit? Not a chance. Lafayette Coney Island is a time capsule and a treasure. Not for the brunch crowd. If you have a hard time letting your hair down a little, just go somewhere else. Cheers!

  • The locals told me to check out Lafayette—and they were absolutely right. Classic, no-frills spot with great service and that old-school Detroit vibe. The food was affordable, tasty, and exactly what I was hoping for. Loved the whole experience. Highly recommend!

  • Lafayette Coney Island rocks! The food was really good very yummy dogs and pie. The dude was holding like 12 plates of hot dogs at once. I was impressed he’s a hero. But unfortunately, my wife would likely leave me for him if she saw this incredible feat so I can’t bring her here.
